En janvier, Mohamed Salah a été lauréat du trophée de joueur africain de l’année 2017 devant le Sénégalais Sadio Mané, classé 2è. Même si le pharaon repart favoris pour le doublé, Sadio Mané a démarré fort cette saison en inscrivant un doublé contre West Ham en ouverture de la Premier League. Naturellement, les statistiques individuelles seront prises en compte pour départager Sadio Mané et Mohamed Salah.
Face à cette rivalité silencieuse au sein du même club entre les deux stars africaine, le coach de Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp a assuré en conférence de presse que ses attaquants (Sadio Mané, Roberto Firminho, Mohamed Salah) ne sont pas en compétition entre eux, mais qu’ils travaillent tous pour le bien de l’équipe.
